A Survey of Driver Preferences

highway at nightThe King of the Road Survey is a questionnaire distributed by Atlas Van Lines to their drivers each year and is meant to give insight into the professional opinions of truck drivers. They ask everything from which states have the best rest stops to which fast food chain is the best. The 2014 results won’t be available for a while, but even looking back to last year, it’s interesting to see what is trending for drivers.

The most notable trends (and two things that go against the gruff driver image conjured up by some people) are that drivers are increasingly eco-friendly, and have adopted a good deal of technology to stay in touch with loved ones while they’re on the road.

“For the first time in the survey's history, more than half of Atlas' drivers (53 percent) seek out recycling opportunities for aluminum, plastic and glass trash items they accumulate throughout their travels.” Plus, more than a third of drivers are using reusable drink containers and reusable shopping bags. This helps create less waste and is good for the environment of course, but there’s also the added benefit of having less garbage in your truck, and staying more organized.

It’s not much of a surprise that over 66% of the drivers surveyed reported that they use a smartphone to stay in touch with loved ones. Some sources cite more like 75% or greater are using smartphones and other mobile devices for video calls, phone calls, and messaging. It increases every year as smartphones become less expensive to own and easier to use, so we expect this will continue to rise.
