Healthier Habits Make for Healthier Drivers

Humans are creatures of habit, so creating positive, healthy, sustainable habits are of utmost importance. But when you’re out on the road and away from home for long stretches of time, it’s tough to avoid falling into less than healthy patterns of behavior that involve heavy reliance on junk food and or caffeine.

Staying healthy is essential not just for your well-being, but for success in your career as well. So here are some healthy habits to help you prevent burnout while also keeping you energized.

Opt for Healthy Food: By planning ahead and stocking up on the right stuff you can help yourself eat well and avoid the junk. If you plan ahead, pack things like pre-washed bags of lettuce and spinach, cut vegetables and fruit, or whole pieces of fruit that are easy to clean. If the gas station is your only option, beef jerky and assorted nuts are solid snack choices that provide your body with sustainable fuel.

Get a Move On: If you have been on the road for a long period of time, there is no better way to help your health than by getting moving. Does that mean that after a long shift you have to run an ultra marathon? No way, but going for a jog or an extended walk every day or a couple times of week can drastically help your body, and actually provide you with more energy. Pedometers have also become quite affordable and can help you track your progress and act as a daily motivator.

Exercise Your Brain: Get in the habit of filling your on-the-road time with things that help you pass the time while and stimulate your brain. It would be unsafe to read while driving, but you can accomplish virtually the same thing by listening to audiobooks or podcasts that allow you to learn by listening. And though we all have our favorite kind of music, why not change things up every once in awhile by listening to a new genre or artist to broaden your musical horizons.
