Important Safety Reminders

As the winter weather continues and we hope for spring, it's a good time to be reminded of safety procedures. The extreme cold and snowy weather has made the routine checks even more critical.

  • When you hook to a trailer, ensure to hook up “by the book."
  • Check your trailer height before you back under. When you back under and you feel it and hear it lock, do a tug forward then push back again.
  • Visually check that the locking bolt and locking handle have fully retracted into the locked position.
  • Check that there is no daylight between the fifth wheel and the trailer King pin plate.
  • Visually, using a flashlight, go under the trailer and verify that the fifth wheel jaws are properly locked around the king pin.
  • Be sure you have three points of contact when entering or exiting your tractor. Watch for ice on the tractor steps or on the ground.
  • Pay attention when walking as a lot of parking lots and walks are ice-covered and dangerous.
  • Adjust your driving speed to road conditions, double your normal following distance, and watch out for other drivers.

Your safety and the safety of those around you is your number one priority!
