NTB Incentives for Drivers: Interview with David Ward

dollar billsNTB recently increased driver pay by four cents per mile, and added a bonus incentive for two weeks surrounding the Fourth of July holiday. Driver David Ward was grateful for the bonus, and talked about his experiences driving with NTB, and shared some of his thoughts about what it means for drivers to make some extra money while being productive on the road.

When he did the math, David figured he brought home over $300 extra dollars for the week before the Fourth of July. He drove 2800 miles that week, which meant that 600 miles were eligible for the holiday bonus. On top of the recent raise which applied to all 2800 of his miles, it was a sizable bonus that he called a “nice perk.” The extra pay is definitely helpful, but David has a lot more reasons why he likes working with NTB.

David started with NTB in October of 2004, and loved the schedule. At NTB, drivers get two days off each week for home time. “It’s always the same two days,” David says. “Five days on and two days off in the trucking industry is big.” David pointed out that many drivers start off working for companies where they have to be on the road for several weeks at a time, but NTB makes it possible to be home for two days every week. Plus, NTB calculates driver miles based on practical miles, meaning that drivers are paid more accurately for the distance they drive. That makes a big difference to David, who said he thinks it’s a much better system for drivers than some other methods.

“I’ve been very happy with NTB,” David said. “They’ve taken care of me.” He mentioned that he appreciates “the Kosters, Henry, and dispatch—everyone in the office. They’re all a fantastic bunch of people.”

When asked if he had anything that he was planning to do with his bonus and raise, David mentioned that he has a wife who will spend it for him, and laughed. The couple has been renovating their house since last year. They’re happy to be making the house just as they want it, to be rid of the paneling that came with the house when they moved in, and to have space for their grandson to stay with them.
