Rolling Into Spring Sunshine
Spring Has Arrived
We always welcome the fresh warm air of spring along our Midwest roadways. There’s no better feeling than cracking the window and putting on a pair of shades as blue skies open up, letting sunshine in our cabs and warming our souls. Soon, shades of green will replace the flat grey of winter, and our roadways will be lined with budding trees, grass, and flowers!
It’s a good day to be on the road.
Spring Driving: Leaving Icy Roads Behind Us and Welcoming Spring
As we look at snowy, icy, and slushy roads in the rear-view mirror, we can look ahead at signs of spring using all of our senses. When exiting your truck, listen for the sounds of birds chirping, smell the fragrance of flowers blooming, and watch as grass begins to grow. With spring comes a renewal of fresh warmth in the air, especially when the blooms start sprouting along the roadways.
However, even though we’ll have a temporary reprieve from icy roads, don’t let your guard down when driving in the spring. A wet road can be just as slick as one with ice, so maintain a safe distance. The recommended following distance increases with the length of a vehicle, so semis need to stay 8 seconds behind in good weather and double that in a storm. Another rule of thumb is to leave a distance the length of your vehicle for every 10mph you’re traveling.
Spring brings driving challenges on dry, sunny days as well. Potholes will be everywhere, so be on the lookout and slow down when you see one. Maintain proper tire pressure to better handle traveling over potholes. There will also be more animals, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists out and about, so give them all their space.
