Stopping Distance

If you are tailgating and the vehicle in front of you has to stop to avoid a collision, your truck will not be able to stop in time as this chart demonstrates.

Always maintain at least a one-second following distance for each 10 feet of vehicle length. Add one second of following distance for each adverse condition, such as if it is snowing, raining, foggy, icy, dark, or if you are driving over 40 miles per hour, driving on a gravel road, etc.

In addition, add one extra second of following distance for every two hours of driving time, and always add a tailgater’s following distance to your following distance.
