Tractor Safety

Monday, June 9, 2014

We make sure to share any helpful information we have about how to stay safe while on the road and what to watch out for, but there’s another procedure that can be surprisingly dangerous: getting in and out of your tractor. It’s not like opening a car door and plopping into the driver’s seat.

As you can imagine, falling while getting in or out of a tractor can result in serious injury. It has happened before that drivers have had injuries bad enough to be off of work for extended periods of time. Obviously your safety inside AND outside of your tractor is our goal, and following safety procedures should be a top priority even during everyday actions like this. It is important to pay attention to what you are doing to avoid getting hurt.

Here are some simple steps to follow to make sure you’re not headed for a spill:

  1. ALWAYS maintain THREE points of contact with the vehicle: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand.

  2. Always “back out” of the tractor. Do not try to climb into the vehicle or out of the vehicle with your hands full.

  3. Take your time and don’t rush. Most falls seem to occur at the beginning or end of a shift when drivers are eager to get moving, or be done for the day.

  4. Place your bag or items into the tractor before you climb in. When exiting, position your bag where you can retrieve it from the ground.

  5. Look and see what is below you before exiting. Be aware of debris, irregular pavement, holes and anything that my present an additional hazard.

  6. NEVER jump from the tractor.

Pay careful attention and reduce your chances of falling and becoming injured. Safety is your first priority!
