A Speed Gauge Reminder (Hint: Slow Down!)

If you’re an NTB driver, chances are you’re aware of the PeopleNet / Speed Gauge Reports that our offices receive daily. Essentially, this report uses satellite communication to compare the speed of your truck to the posted speed limit in that location.

Your truck is pinged by the system every few minutes; if you are traveling above the posted speed limit, a violation is noted. There is a “tolerance” built in that allows you to run 5 mph over the posted speed limit on interstate highways, and 3 mph over the posted speed limit on secondary roads.

If you trigger an occasional violation, which is common, it is not a major concern. However, if you have multiple violations in a day, or over a period of weeks, a disciplinary report will be generated. If you are shown with a speed of 15 mph or more over the posted speed limit, you will be subject to discipline. If you continue to have issues, your tractor may be governed to 60 mph.

NTB truck drivers should not be speeding, obtaining speed gauge violations, or getting speeding tickets. Unfortunately, all of these are happening, some for as little as 1-5 mph over the posted speed limit. If you are written a warning by a trooper or officer, it counts against your and NTB’s CSA score, the same as a ticket would.

This summer you will see increased enforcement of the traffic laws, especially in construction zones. Pay attention to the posted limits, stay alert, anticipate problems, and make the roads safer for all who use them.

Remember, safety is your first priority!
