Always Reduce your Speed When…

Just a refresher for the new year! There are many times when reduced speed is necessary for safe driving. Make sure you’re slowing down when needed, no matter whether you’re driving a truck or a passenger vehicle. Safety is our top priority.

Always Reduce your Speed When…

  • Your Vision is Restricted - At night, fog, rain, snow or other conditions restrict visibility; speed should be reduced to a point which will enable to stop within the distance you can see ahead.
  • Traction Is Reduced - Always reduce your speed when rain, ice, snow or other adverse weather conditions exist.
  • At Railroad Grade Crossings - Be alert for vehicles that may be required to stop such as school busses or haz-mat carriers that are required to stop even if there is no train approaching. Also, many crossings are extremely rough.
  • Emergency Vehicles are Approaching - When emergency vehicles are approaching, move to the right, slow down until they pass. If there are emergency vehicles, highway crews, or construction vehicles on the shoulder, slow down and give them as much room as possible.
  • Before Entering Construction Zones - Never exceed the posted limit and increase your following distance even when highway workers are not present.
  • Entering Curves or Ramps - Posted limits are for automobiles in good weather. Your speed should be 5 to 10 miles per hour below that limit in good weather and even further reduced in any adverse weather.
  • In Heavy or Slow Moving Traffic - Remember that it takes a tractor trailer unit a lot longer to stop than a car. Do not tailgate, do not try to intimidate other drivers with the size of your vehicle. Always try to maintain a SAFE following distance.
  • Weather Conditions Change - Weather, rural road, cities and towns, heavy traffic; drive according to conditions. Be alert for other drivers who may make a mistake, leave enough room incase you make a mistake.
  • Posted Speed Limits Change - A driver’s speed should never exceed the posted speed laws. Remember, posted limits apply only when road and weather conditions are favorable.

Thank you to all NTB drivers for making safety top priority!
