Back to School - Truck Driving 101

Driving school may be in your rearview mirror, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important to review the basics! Here are some tips every driver should keep in mind on the road:

Look Far Enough Ahead: When looking at the road ahead, a good rule of thumb is to always look 12 to 15 seconds ahead in order to have a safe stopping distance or change lanes. But what exactly does 12 to 15 seconds look like? At a lower speed, 12 to 15 seconds is about one block. While highway driving, it’s about a quarter of a mile.

Maintain Your Truck with Regular Inspections:  It’s important to take a look at your truck before, during, and after a trip to keep yourself and everyone on the road safe. Some things to pay attention to are gauges, mirrors, brakes, tires, steering systems, wheels and rims.

Communicate with Other Drivers: It may seem like common sense, but other drivers can’t know what you are going to do unless you tell them. When making a turn or changing lanes, be sure to signal early and don’t forget to cancel your signal once you’ve finished turning or changing lanes. If you’re slowing down, tap your brakes a few time or use your emergency lights to signal that you’re slowing down or stopping.

Thanks to all of our drivers for making safety their top priority!
