Back to the Basics: Exercising to Relieve Back Pain

Long hours spent driving can result in some uncomfortable situations, specifically when it comes to your back. Next time you’re on the road, test out these exercises to help relieve—or prevent—back pain:

1. Shrug it Off - Lifting and settling your shoulders (think: an “I don’t know” shrug) for 5 second intervals will help remove tension in your shoulders and neck. An easy way to perform this exercise is during a song or while waiting at a red light.

2. Stretch Often - Before leaving, during breaks, and after your drive, focus on loosening up your muscles by stretching. Breathe deeply and relax to help alleviate stress and tension.

3. Sit Up - Your back pain may be a result of little support. Focus on good posture and try not to slouch or hunch forward. Place a pillow behind your lower back to help keep it at the correct angle.

It’s a good idea to practice a regular exercise and stretching routine, especially since you don’t have a chance to move much while on the road. These three steps can get you started on being more active and healthy as a trucker.
