Beware the High Winds!

A blustery, snowy—and sometimes icy—day sounds pretty typical for winter in the midwest. While these conditions are potentially dangerous, another similarly problematic, and oftentimes overlooked type of weather is high winds. Consider taking the following precautions before hitting the road, and while driving in windy conditions:

1. Double Check - while pre-trip inspections are required, it is a good idea to check your semi twice, making sure everything is securely fastened and stable, and to be aware of your “sail areas” before starting.

2. Watch Carefully - certain high-wind areas will always be adequately marked with signs to alert you of possible danger. Be on the look-out and slow down when you reach these sections of your trip.

3. Prepare Consciously - remember, an empty truck poses a bigger threat for tipping in high winds. Listen to weather alerts on local stations and drive slowly or delay driving if conditions worsen.

4. Think Cautiously - if you are unsure about road conditions, slow down or pull over. A quick stop gives you the opportunity to double-check your truck and rest up for when the weather improves.

5. Plan Accordingly - map out your route beforehand, checking weather alerts for future dates. If unpleasant conditions are in the forecast, plan to add some extra time to your trip in case you need to slow down or stop.
