“I WAS IN A HURRY!”

How many times has the excuse for a mistake been “I was in a hurry?” How much time and energy has it cost you? Being in a hurry often means missing details and making mistakes.

Obviously no one wants you to waste time, but you must take the time to follow the established policies and procedures that have been put in place to protect you, NTB and the public.

  • Establish an efficient routine for all required procedures so that you do them the same way every time, covering all the important points.
  • Always complete a thorough pre- and post-trip inspection on every piece of equipment that you move. Report and document any issues to Dispatch.
  • Weigh your loads! If it is a split load, leave a copy of the weight ticket for the next driver. Do not depend on the suspension gauge.
  • Obey all traffic laws especially in construction zones. Tickets cost you time and money.
  • Take an extra few seconds to verify your trailer number and your destination.
  • Follow all procedures when dropping or hooking to a trailer.
  • Do your visual checks!
  • Plan your route before you start your trip. Pick the best route.
  • Backing. Take the time to check the area before backing. GET OUT AND LOOK as many times as necessary to back safely into a dock.
  • Use all of your time effectively, efficiently. Do not try to save time by skipping safety related items. A few minutes or seconds saved can be very costly. Take time to do things right!

Thank you for making safety your first priority!
