Beating the summer heat on the road this year

While summer is a great time to be on the road, it is also important to be aware of the dangers that come with the season. This summer, temperatures are reaching record temps nationwide, increasing the possibility of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and overall fatigue. To help you stay safe and healthy during the summer months, here are some tips and recommendations to help you beat the heat.

Stay hydrated

One of the most important things you can do to combat the heat is to stay hydrated. Bring extra water bottles in your cabin and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. It is also important to avoid overconsuming drinks like coffee and soda, as they can actually further dehydrate you. To make plain water a bit tastier, consider adding some flavor with a slice of lemon, cucumber, or other fruits or even purchasing a water-flavoring packet like the ones here.

Wear comfortable and breathable clothing

Wearing the right clothing is essential for staying cool on the road and keeping you on top of your game. At NTB, we recognize that you know what clothing options are best for you and encourage you to wear what you feel comfortable in. Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen allow sweat to evaporate more easily and loose-fitting clothes are also better for airflow. You should also wear a hat to protect your face from the sun and sunglasses to protect your eyes from any unnecessary strain, as the intense summer sunlight can harshly reflect off the road.

Plan your routes

Getting stuck in a congested area during the summer, especially if it happens to be during the hotter parts of the day, can be both inconvenient and frustrating. Take the time to plan your route to avoid those sorts of areas. You can even attempt to plan your route around the cooler times of the day. This will not only keep you more comfortable, but it can also save you time and fuel. Additionally, you should plan ahead for optimal rest stops and fueling stations where you can take a break and cool off.

Take breaks

Just like any activity taking place in the heat, it is important to take frequent breaks when driving during the summer, especially as this year sees record high temps. Even if you do not feel tired, the heat can be draining and make you more susceptible to fatigue, increasing your risk of encountering a dangerous situation. Try to take a 10–15-minute break every few hours to rest, recharge, and, most importantly, rehydrate!

Keep your truck comfortable

Make sure your truck is in good condition before hitting the road. While it is always important to complete your pre-trips, it’s even more important during the summer. A well-maintained truck is less likely to break down in extreme heat, keeping you safe and comfortable on the road. Also, make sure to stock your fridge or cooler with your favorite drinks and bring along portable fans (they even have these, which rest around your neck!) for optimal airflow.

Summer can be a challenging time for truck drivers, but with the right preparation and with a carrier that cares, you can stay safe and healthy on the road. Connect with NTB today to learn more about our driving opportunities.
