Top Apps for Truck Drivers

It’s very likely that you’re carrying a smartphone right now. A survey from American Truck Business Services (ATBS) found that 79% of truck drivers use one. Over 90% of those smartphone users reportedly download apps for their phone, too. And many of us feel we can barely live without it as we’ve become increasingly connected to friends, family, and information.

  • Ways to keep in touch are very important for people who aren’t at home every day. Skype and Google Hangouts are free apps that offer video chatting so you can see the PC, mobile, or tablet user on the other end and feel a little closer to home.
  • Pandora or Spotify are common choices for free apps that provide nearly endless amounts of music. For a small monthly fee, you can get unlimited content and additional features. If you get tired of the radio and don’t have an extensive music catalog of your own, one of these options is your best bet.
  • My Fitness Pal and LoseIt help motivate you to get some exercise in every day, and to make good food choices. They offer easy menu entry options including a barcode scanner for packaged products, or a simple search for common groceries and even restaurant items. Fast Food Calorie Counter is another eating app that is a tool for making better decisions when it comes to what’s to eat today.
  • Knowing the weather and road conditions are crucial for safe driving. The Weather Channel, WeatherBug, Weather Underground, and many others give you an idea of what to expect including temperature and precipitation including radar maps.
  • Google Maps is a must-have for navigating, and even has traffic volume updates in most places. Other apps like Waze offer you even more information. With Waze, members of the community post notices in real-time and you can check the app (while stopped of course!) to see if anything is coming up that should be avoided.

What are the apps you can’t live without?
