5 Tips To Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick!

The start of a new year is a great time to hit the “reset button” and resolve or address areas of life you want to improve. You may make a decision to accomplish a personal goal or break a habit, improve your CDL-A truck driving career or learn a new skill or hobby. Whatever you’re looking to achieve, here are NTB’s top five tips for making your resolution stick.

Start small and be specific
Make resolutions that you think you can keep rather than trying to tackle everything in your life you want to address. For example, rather than making your resolution “lose weight,” make it to a certain amount of weight per quarter or to exercise three or four days a week. Realistic is better than drastic in the long run.

Focus on one goal at a time
It’s tempting to make multiple resolutions, but if you do, you’re probably setting yourself up for failure. It takes time to create a bad habit or behavior so replacing it with a good one will take time, too. You don’t have to reassess everything in your life at once. Instead, work toward changing one thing, succeed, and move on to the next goal. Achieving even one small goal can boost your belief in yourself. For larger goals, consider breaking them apart into manageable chunks to work on one at a time.

Make a plan & tell others
Creating a detailed written plan can help you stick to your goal because it allows you to consider what tactics you will use when you're faced with challenges. Experts suggest that you brainstorm how you will tackle a major change, including the steps you will take, why you want to do it, and ways you can keep yourself on track. It’s also a good idea to share your resolution with family and friends so they can support your goal and help hold you to it.

Be patient with yourself
Whatever you’re trying to achieve is a process. Minor missteps are expected so don’t give up completely because you have an off day or experience a setback. Just continue on your journey toward your goal. This is not a race to the finish – you just want to get there!

Keep working on your goals
Studies show that by March, many people have lost that initial spark of motivation that they had in January. Continue to work on your goals and reevaluate along the way. If your current approach is not working, adjust your strategies to develop a new plan. Don’t give up!
